Prof. EMP Ekanayake

Professor E M P Ekanayake assumed duties as the 5th Vice-Chancellor of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL) on 25th May 2017. He has over 29 years of service as an academic and over 18 years’ administrative experience in the university system. Prof. Ekanayake obtained the B.Sc. (Hons.) Degree in Mathematics from the University of Kelaniya in 1986 and thereafter, proceeded to the University of Kyushu, Japan where he obtained the M.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees in 1991 and 1994 respectively. He is also a Postgraduate Fellow of the University of Oxford, U.K.

Having entered the university service as an Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Kelaniya, after obtaining his postgraduate qualifications, Prof. Ekanayake joined the University of Ruhuna as a Senior Lecturer (Grade II) in Mathematics in 1994.   In 1996 he joined the Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University as a Senior Lecturer (Grade II) in Mathematical Sciences. With the establishment of the WUSL in 1996 he continued to serve in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in his capacity as Senior Lecturer (Grade I). From 2015 onwards he is functioning as the Associate Professor.

Prof. Ekanayake is a pioneer of the Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the WUSL. He was involved in the transition and development of the new University in his capacity as an academic as well as an administrator and a Member of the Senate and the Council. He has been elected five times uncontested as the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the WUSL and developed the Faculty of 120 students, 14 staff members, 1 degree programme and 3 Departments of Study into the present status of 526 students, 70 staff members and 10 degree programmes offered by 7 Departments of Study.   He was responsible for the development of the infrastructure of the Faculty from makeshift buildings into the modern Faculty complex of today.   Under his leadership, the Faculty has been able to maintain the employability rate of the graduates of the Faculty at over 80%.

Professor Ekanayake can also be considered a pioneer in the formation of the Departments of Study and introduction of degree programmes under the Technology Stream which were to be conducted under the Faculty of Applied Sciences in the first instance.   He compiled the proposal for establishment of the Faculty of Technology which will absorb the Departments formed under the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

Some Activities of the SDC

Workshop on Use of SPSS


The SDC of the WUSL with the “Centre for Agribusiness Studies” (CABS) of the Dept. of Agribusiness Management of the Faculty of Agriculture & Plantation Management (FAPM) has conducted a two-day workshop on the “Use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Data Analysis” for its academic and administrative staff as well as to recently pass out and current final year research students on 29th and 30th July 2006 at the Makandura premises of the University. Ms. Dinum Perera, Mr. Jagath Edirisinghe and Dr. Udith Jayasinghe-Mudalige act as the resource persons. Prof. S. J. B. A. Jayasekara (Dean, FAPM) graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest.

Library User Awareness Program

A half-day workshop on “user awareness of e-resources available for a library” was conducted by the SDC and the Makandura Library of the WUSL on 27th July 2006 for academic and non-academic staff members as well as to 3rd and 4th year students.

Mrs. Sumana Jayasuriya (the Librarian, U of Colombo / the Country Co-coordinator of Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information) and Mr. Harrison Perera (the Librarian, U of Peradeniya / the former Librarian of the British Council in Sri Lanka) delivered the lectures.

Human Rights Awareness Program

A half-day seminar on “Human Rights” was conducted by Centre for the Study of Human Rights (University of Colombo) at the Makandura premises on 24th November 2006 for academic and non-academic staff members of the WUSL.

Mr. Jagath Liyanarchchi (Lawyer), Mr. Madawa Thennakon (Lawyer) and Mr. Menaka Harankahawa (Lecturer, Faculty of Law) conducted the lectures on Human Rights Concepts & Importance of Protecting Human Rights, The Legal action against unethical practices, Labour Rights respectively. Mrs. Sumudu Nilaweera of the Centre for the Study on Human Rights coordinates the program.

Workshop on “Effective Counseling in the University”

The SDC in collaboration with the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries & Nutrition (FLFN) held an interactive one-day workshop on the above subject on 23rd August 2007 at the Makandura premises.

Ms. Chandima Moonamalle Epa, a Consultant Counselor, was the resource person. This event was funded by the “Improving Relevance & Quality of the Undergraduate Education” (IRQUE) project received by the FLFN. Dr. (Mrs.) J. D. S. S. Jayakody has coordinated this particular activity on behalf of the FLFN.

Workshop on “Research Proposal Writing”

The SDC in collaboration with the FLFN held a one-day workshop research proposal writing on 02nd March 2007 at the Makandura premises. Prof. V. Karunarathne, Prof. L. Dissanayake and Dr. Nobel Jayasuriya has participated as the resource persons. The National Science Foundation (NSF) and its Director Dr. Nobel Jayasuriya has played a key role in organized this particular event, where the funds were obtained from the IRQUE project received by the FLFN. Dr. (Mrs.) C. V. L. Jayasinghe has coordinated the activity on behalf of the FLFN.

The SDC intends to organize a follow-up workshop in the near future so that participants to the above, especially the junior academics of the WUSL, to upgrade the proposals that they have prepared based on the guidelines provided by the resource persons before they are submitted for funding from the NSF and the Wayamba University Research Grants.

Life Skill Development Workshop on “Positive Thinking”

The “Brahma Kumari Raja Yoga Centre in Sri Lanka” in collaboration with the SDC has conducted a life skill development workshop to the academic staff members of the WUSL on 13th June 2008 at Staff Development Centre (SDC) located in Makandura, Gonawila (NWP). The workshop specifically covers the area of “Positive Thinking”.

The SDC and Career Guidance Unit (CGU) intend to organize follow-up workshops with the same institution for academics, non-academics and students in a number of areas, including stress management and meditation etc.
